Diarrhoea

Causes This is very common and when it is due to something you have just eaten or a mild infection it usually settles quickly without treatment.

Treatment However if it does persist try staying on a bland diet low in roughage – without fruit, vegetables or any cereals with bran and with white bread or even just take nourishing liquids for 24 hours. If this doesn’t work and you still don’t feel too ill ask your local pharmacist about tablets to calm or slow the bowel actions such as:

Immodium

Lomotil

Codeine phosphate

However if it doesn’t settle by the combination of diet and bowel sedatives see your GP or try clicking on ‘change in bowel habit’ in the ‘Symptom Checker’.

Note If you begin to feel very unwell at any time then seek your doctor’s advice.
