Cause of your symptoms

If your abdominal pain settles quickly it is probably due to bowel spasm caused by something you have eaten.

Advice

Try the simple treatment outlined below for four weeks but if your abdominal pain is preventing any of your activities like working or sleeping see your GP.

Treatments

Try a simple diet and if necessary antispasmodic tablets. A pharmacist can advise on suitable treatments.

What now?

If you quickly get completely better nothing further needs to be done. However, if your abdominal pain gets worse over the next four weeks or recurs after stopping treatment see your GP.

Summary of your symptoms

Date checker completed: Saturday 7th December 2024

You are less than 50 yrs old and have abdominal pain with a normal appetite and no weight loss. You have no rectal bleeding and no change in bowel habit.

Additional information if you see your GP

Your GP will probably examine your tummy and back passage and if these are normal you are at low risk of having serious bowel disease and it would be reasonable to treat, watch and wait for a further period of time. However, if the pain persists you are likely to be referred to a routine hospital clinic for further investigations and advice on how to manage your pain.
